Education
Access to a quality education in an age-appropriate environment for children three years to end of senior school
Every child has a right to a quality, inclusive education in a safe and nurturing – an education that is a solid foundation for the child to reach their full potential.
AEE Rwanda works with children’s education at the early childhood development (ECD) and the formal primary and secondary school stages.
We recognise that a child’s household is an important support to formal education and include interventions that strengthen families’ capabilities to support their children’s learning.
We are committed to providing a comprehensive, high-quality basic education in formal, non-formal and alternative education programmes, ranging from early childhood education to primary school and senior school
Early Childhood Development
Early childhood development centers (ECDCs) promote the intellectual, physical, and social development of three to five year old children through age-appropriate structured learning and play.
To ensure that ECDCs are accessible to parents and children, AEE supports small home-based ECDCs and larger community-based or school-attached ECDCs. AEE builds new or refurbishes and equips existing facilities, and trains early childhood caregivers and teachers.
Beyond play and education for children, ECDCs are invaluable to parents who must work daily for the income to feed their family. Leaving a child at an ECDC in the morning frees parents, predominately mothers, to work without worrying about young children unattended at home or in the fields under sun or rain.
Feeding programs at ECDCs not only give the children and nutritious balanced meal but also engage the parents in preparing the meals, providing important health and nutrition knowledge they can use at home. The caregivers and teachers at ECDCs are trained to monitor children for developmental problems and will work with parents and refer to local health services where needed.
Primary and Secondary School
All children should have the means to participate in Rwanda’s twelve-year formal schooling, regardless of their social or economic circumstances. AEE Rwanda will support students from poor and disadvantaged families directly through providing uniforms and school materials.
AEE Rwanda recognises that the home is a foundation to a child’s education. We work with the families of students to build their capacity to support and contribute to their child’s education, through programs including: building families’ incomes, ensuring that children are enjoy a balanced diet, and adult literacy for parents.
Sponsorship
AEE Rwanda's student sponsorship programs help the most disadvantaged students in program areas through direct assistance - including the school materials needed to participate in classes and practical assistance to students' families to sustainably increase their household's income.
Community Learning Support
AEE provides literacy programs for out-of-school youth and adults to ensure that they can fully participate in a modern Rwanda. A lack of reading material, especially written in Kinyarwanda, is a barrier to developing literacy in the community. AEE establishes community libraries, stocked with a range of books, and trains community members to manage the libraries.
